First Aid for Mental Health (Level 2)

The First Aid for Mental health level 2 course is an excellent starting point for aspiring Mental Health First Aiders and those wishing to gain knowledge in the basics of Mental Health First Aid. The course offers knowledge on what mental health is, why people develop mental health conditions and the role of a First Aider for mental health.

Course Overview

Starting by learning how to correctly define mental health, the course then highlights how to indicate an understanding of the stigma surrounding mental health.

The course provides knowledge in how to provide advice and practical support for a person presenting a mental health condition. Learning the appropriate advice that should be provided to a person suffering from a suspected mental health condition and when to contact the emergency services in respect of first aid for mental health.

They will be able to recognise and identify signs of stress and learn strategies on how to manage stress.

Upon completing this course participants will know how to recognise a range of mental health conditions. Be able to identify signs and/or symptoms for the following mental health conditions:

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Psychosis

  • Eating disorders

  • Suicide

  • Self-harm

The course provides an understanding of the impact of substance abuse on mental health.

Participants will learn and understand the first aid action plan for mental health and be able to put it in place.

Finally the course focuses on how to implement a positive mental health culture in the workplace.

The course follows a syllabus laid down by Nuco Training Systems and utilises the following training methods:

  • Interactive presentations and open conversations to convey important information

  • Active learning methods involving small group practice and role play scenarios with ongoing instructor assessment

  • Up to date information presented in a relaxed learning environment

  • Opportunity for all students to complete of a course feedback form, register for qualification expiry reminders and keep up to date with first aid changes, further learning opportunities and developments.
